Setting Up Face ID And Adding Alternate Appearance

If you did not set up the face ID when you set up your iPhone for the very first time, go to settings, then tap Face ID & Passcode. After that, select Face ID and follow the instructions. In order to set up alternate appearances that will be recognized by the face ID feature:

  • go to settings.
  • select Face ID & Passcode.
  • then tap Setup Alternate Appearance.
  • then follow the instructions.

If you have physical limitations, you can tap the Accessibility Options when you are setting up the Face ID feature. When you are doing this, the Face ID settings do not require a full range of head movement.


The use of Face ID is safe, but the feature requires you to look at your iPhone in a more consistent way. Face ID also has accessibility features that can be used by blind people or those who have low vision.

You can also temporarily deactivate or disable Face ID on your iPhone. You can do it by pressing and holding the side button and any volume button for 2 seconds. After the slider appears, press the side button in order to immediately lock your iPhone. 


Your iPhone will automatically lock if you do not touch the screen for a minute or more. The next time you unlock your iPhone with a passcode, Face ID will be enabled again.
